Hog Call

Divide the students into pairs and have them line up against one wall of the room. Have each partnership come up with a compound word, such as “basketball,” “fireworks,” “grandmother,” or “snowman.” If time allows, have each partnership share the compound word that they chose. Each half of the partnership will then take one half of the compound word. (For example, if the word was “skateboard,” one person would be “skate” and the other would be “board.”)

Now have each pair turn with their backs to each other and close their eyes. Explain that when you say “Go,” they should all take 10 to 15 steps away from their partner. Emphasize that for safety reasons, they should walk slowly and keep their arms outstretched. When everyone has scattered throughout the room, explain that their goal is to now find their partner by yelling out their half of the compound word and walking toward each other. Their eyes must remain closed until they have found their partner. When they have found their partner, they should remain quiet until all the pairs have found each other. Once everyone has reconnected with their partner, have them get to know their partner by asking each other the following questions:

1. What is your favorite hobby or interest?
2. What is one goal you have for the future?
3. What is one thing that you do well?

You may change these questions to better fit the needs of your age group, but make sure to keep them simple so they don’t require long responses.

Once everyone has interviewed their partner, have the partnerships take turns standing up and introducing each other to the entire group, using the information they gathered in their interviews.
