Introduction:
You can learn a lot about a group of students by observing them in this get-to-know-you activity. It’s a great way for you to connect with your class and better understand their interests.
Details:
Spatial Requirements: Regular Classroom Setup
Activity Type: Movement/Group
Grades: Any
Group size: 4+
Time: 10-15 minutes
Materials:
- None
Activity Instructions:
Have everyone stand up. Tell them that when you say “Go,” everyone should walk around the room and look for someone who uses the same brand of toothpaste as they do. When they find someone, they should stay with that person and look together for more people that also use that brand. Let students know that some of them may find that no one uses the same brand as they do. Tell them not to worry; it’s OK to sometimes stand alone.
When everyone has finished their search and several groups are formed, ask each group which toothpaste they represent. Then repeat the activity with another prompt, such as, “Now find a group that likes the same type of food as you do.”
Repeat the activity a few more times. You may want to come up with your own prompts that suit your class or age group. Some ideas include:
- Find a group that shares your favorite movie.
- Find a group that share your favorite TV show.
- Find a group that shares your favorite genre of music.
- Find a group that shares your passion, interest, or hobby.
Processing the Experience:
- Were you surprised at the results of this activity?
- Did any of you find that you were by yourself? How did that make you feel?
- Why is it okay to stand alone at times?
